August News from the Nursery

August has certainly been a challenging month for growers, with the hot and exceptionally dry conditions putting pressure on plants and nurseries across the country. With drought now affecting much of England, water management has become an increasingly important part of everyday nursery work. (The Times⁠)

Here at Coastal Hedging, we have been keeping a close eye on our plants, making sure young stock has the water it needs while avoiding unnecessary waste. The dry conditions have also highlighted just how valuable resilient, coastal and drought-tolerant plants can be in the garden.

Our summer stock is looking particularly good, with many shrubs, herbaceous perennials and grasses providing plenty of colour and interest. August is also an excellent time to look ahead to autumn planting. As temperatures begin to ease, the cooler months provide ideal conditions for establishing new hedges, shrubs and perennials before winter.

We are continuing to grow and prepare a wide range of hardy plants at the nursery, including many varieties well suited to exposed, coastal gardens. From reliable evergreen hedging to flowering shrubs, grasses and architectural perennials, there is plenty to choose from for creating a garden that can cope with challenging conditions.

The recent weather has also reinforced the importance of choosing the right plant for the right place. Drought-tolerant species, plants with silver or leathery foliage, and many Mediterranean and coastal plants are proving increasingly valuable as British summers become hotter and drier. (The Times⁠)
