May News from the Nursery

After one of the driest springs I can remember, we did finally get some much needed rain over the bank holiday weekend. While growers and gardeners were delighted, there were a lot of soggy holiday makers who were not so pleased.

We have also had some very hard frosts lately, which have caused damage to the young growth on many plants. While not fatal it has made some things temporarily unsaleable at our busiest time for sales.

May is the month when it all gets very hectic around the nursery, sales are at their peak, young plants are desperate for potting and propagation is in full swing. The watering seems endless and how ever good your irrigation system is it always seems to miss some plants while over watering others!

We have already sold out of many of the overwintered plants, but with everything growing away rapidly we have new plants becoming available all the time.

There is a good selection of grasses including Lamprothyrsus hieronymi which is new for us. It is an early flowering dwarf grass with pale green leaves and fluffy silvery flowers.

We also have a nice selection of herbaceous plants available. To give your borders an exotic look we have Salvia involucrata Bethellii.

The next crop of Griselinia littoralis is doing well and we will soon have plants ready for sale in 9 cm pots.

For coastal gardens we still have some good sized plants of the salt tolerant free flowering Fuchsia magellanica Floriade.
