Description

This compact, evergreen shrub, commonly known as Chilean guava, is valued for its glossy, aromatic foliage, delicate white to pale pink bell-shaped flowers, and delicious, highly fragrant berries. Flowering in late spring and early summer, the blooms are followed by small red fruits in autumn, prized for their sweet, strawberry-like flavour and distinctive perfume.
Typically growing to 1–2 m (3–6 ft) in height and spread, Ugni molinae thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance and benefits from a sheltered position in colder areas. The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the edible fruits are enjoyed fresh or used in jams, desserts, and preserves.
Ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, edible landscapes, and containers, Ugni molinae combines year-round evergreen structure with ornamental flowers and flavourful fruit, making it an attractive and productive addition to the garden.
