Description
This a magnificent evergreen shrub is renowned for its large, pure white flowers, each beautifully marked with deep maroon blotches at the base of the petals and centred with a cluster of golden stamens. Flowering profusely from late spring into early summer, the blooms create a spectacular display against the aromatic, dark green foliage. The leaves are coated with a fragrant, sticky resin known as labdanum, which has long been valued in the perfume industry.
A superb choice for dry, sunny gardens, Cistus ladanifer thrives in poor, well-drained soils and is exceptionally drought tolerant once established. Its upright, bushy habit makes it ideal for Mediterranean-style planting, gravel gardeuns, coastal landscapes and informal hedging. It requires very little maintenance and performs best in a sheltered position with full sun.
