Description
A striking deciduous shrub with colourful variegated foliage, vibrant winter stems and year-round garden interest. The broad green leaves are boldly edged with rich golden-yellow, creating a bright display throughout spring and summer before turning attractive shades of orange and red in autumn. Once the leaves have fallen, the vivid crimson-red stems provide outstanding colour through the winter months.
Clusters of small creamy-white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, followed by white berries that are attractive to birds. This tough and reliable dogwood thrives in a wide range of soils, including damp conditions, and performs best in full sun or partial shade. Prune hard in early spring every few years to encourage the brightest new stem colour.
Ideal for mixed borders, wildlife gardens, woodland planting, watersides and winter displays, Cornus alba ‘Spaethii’ also makes an excellent specimen shrub or informal hedge.
