Description
Ageratina ligustrina is an elegant evergreen shrub valued for its masses of fragrant white flowers that brighten the garden from late summer through to autumn, when many other plants are beginning to fade. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Native to Central America, this attractive shrub has glossy, dark green foliage and a naturally rounded habit, growing to around 2–3 metres in height and spread. It thrives in a sheltered, sunny or partially shaded position in fertile, well-drained soil. In milder coastal regions of the UK it remains evergreen, providing year-round structure and interest. It is particularly well suited to mixed shrub borders, woodland gardens and sheltered courtyard gardens.
Prune lightly in spring to maintain a compact shape and remove any frost-damaged growth. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and protect the roots during colder winters.
