Description
Dryopteris affinis, commonly known as the Golden-scaled Male Fern, is a handsome, robust evergreen to semi-evergreen fern that forms impressive clumps of upright, arching fronds. The fresh green foliage provides excellent texture and structure, making it a superb choice for shady and woodland-style planting.
New fronds emerge with attractive golden-brown scales, gradually developing into strong, glossy green foliage. Its substantial form makes it particularly useful for adding year-round structure and lushness to shaded borders, woodland gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.
Dryopteris affinis prefers a moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial or full shade. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance and tolerant of a range of conditions, making it an excellent choice for difficult shady areas where other plants may struggle.
