Description
Trachycarpus fortunei, commonly known as the windmill palm or Chusan palm, is a hardy evergreen palm that brings a bold, architectural presence to the garden. Its large, fan-shaped, deep green leaves are held atop a distinctive fibrous trunk, creating an exotic appearance while remaining one of the most cold-tolerant palms available.
Slow to moderate in growth, it can eventually reach 8–12 m (26–40 ft) in favourable conditions. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade and is remarkably resilient to wind, frost, and urban conditions once established. Mature plants may produce clusters of small yellow flowers in spring, followed by blue-black fruits on female specimens.
Ideal as a striking specimen tree for contemporary, tropical-inspired, or Mediterranean-style gardens, Trachycarpus fortunei also performs well in sheltered courtyards and large containers when young. Its evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and interest, making it a reliable focal point in gardens across a wide range of climates.
