Description
Araujia sericifera, commonly known as the Moth Plant or Cruel Plant, is a vigorous evergreen climber admired for its fragrant, creamy-white to pale pink star-shaped flowers that appear from midsummer into autumn. The blooms have a sweet jasmine-like scent and are followed by distinctive pear-shaped seed pods filled with silky-haired seeds that are dispersed by the wind when ripe.
Native to South America, this fast-growing climber is ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas and trellises, it thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil and is relatively drought tolerant once established.
In the UK, Araujia sericifera is best grown in mild coastal areas or against a sunny, sheltered wall where it can be protected from severe frosts.
