Description

Sporobolus heterolepis, commonly known as prairie dropseed, is a warm-season, perennial bunchgrass in the grass family (Poaceae) native to the North American prairies. It is widely valued for its graceful form, fine-textured foliage, and exceptional adaptability, making it a popular choice for native landscapes, meadow plantings, and ornamental gardens.
This long-lived grass forms dense, fountain-like clumps of narrow, arching green leaves that typically grow 30–60 cm (1–2 ft) tall, with flowering stems reaching 60–120 cm (2–4 ft). In late summer, delicate, airy flower panicles rise above the foliage, producing tiny pinkish to tan flowers that mature into bronze-colored seeds. The blooms are noted for their distinctive fragrance, often described as resembling coriander, buttered popcorn, or toasted nuts.
Prairie dropseed thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, and rocky sites. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal maintenance. The foliage turns attractive shades of golden-orange in autumn, providing multi-season interest, while the persistent clumps offer winter structure and habitat for wildlife.
