Description
Correa backhousiana is an attractive, evergreen Australian shrub valued for its compact growth, glossy foliage and unusual bell-shaped flowers. The rounded, dark green leaves provide year-round interest, while clusters of soft pink to reddish tubular flowers appear from autumn through winter, providing valuable colour when many other garden plants are dormant.
Naturally suited to exposed coastal conditions, Correa backhousiana is tolerant of salt-laden winds and is an excellent choice for seaside gardens, coastal hedging and difficult exposed sites. It prefers a sunny or lightly shaded position in well-drained soil and, once established, has good drought tolerance.
A versatile and relatively low-maintenance shrub, it works well as an informal hedge, mixed border plant or specimen shrub. The nectar-rich flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
