Description
An attractive, frost-tender perennial from the pea family (Fabaceae), prized for its elegant, pinnate foliage and long-lasting displays of unusual yellow flowers. It forms an upright, bushy clump that brings an exotic touch to borders and sheltered gardens.
From mid-summer until the first frosts, the plant produces slender spikes of bright yellow, pea-like flowers, each marked with distinctive reddish-brown to purple markings. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, providing valuable late-season color and wildlife interest.
Growing to approximately 1.2–2 m (4–6½ ft) tall with a spread of 60–90 cm (2–3 ft), Amicia zygomeris thrives in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. In cooler climates, it benefits from a warm, sheltered position and winter protection, or it can be grown in a large container and overwintered in a frost-free location.
