September is always an important month in the nursery as summer gradually gives way to autumn. The days are becoming shorter, but the milder temperatures mean that many plants are still putting on plenty of growth and there is a surprising amount of colour around the nursery.
Autumn colour begins
Some of the most attractive plants at this time of year are the grasses and late-flowering perennials. Miscanthus, Pennisetum and Calamagrostis are developing their characteristic flower heads, which catch the light beautifully and provide plenty of movement in the garden.
Late-flowering Salvias, Penstemons, Achilleas and Rudbeckias are also continuing to provide colour, while many of them are still attracting bees and other insects on warmer days.
Preparing for autumn
September is a busy time for general nursery maintenance. Plants that have finished their main flush of summer growth are being checked, spaced and tidied, while we continue to keep stock looking its best for planting during the autumn.
Autumn is an excellent time for planting many shrubs, hedging plants and hardy perennials. The soil is still warm from the summer, while increasing rainfall usually provides the moisture needed to help new plants establish before winter.
A good time for hedging
For anyone planning a new hedge, the coming months are an ideal time to get planting. Establishing plants before winter allows their roots to settle in while conditions are generally cooler and damper.
Our range of coastal hedging plants includes many varieties particularly well suited to exposed gardens and areas affected by salt-laden winds. Planting in autumn gives them plenty of time to establish before the stronger growth of spring.
Looking ahead
As we move into October, the nursery will gradually take on a more autumnal appearance. The grasses will become increasingly prominent, deciduous plants will begin to colour and some of the evergreen shrubs will really come into their own.
There is still plenty happening here, though, and we will be continuing to grow, maintain and dispatch plants throughout the autumn planting season.
From everyone at the nursery, thank you for your continued support – and happy planting!
